5 New Years Resolutions for Your Home in 2018

As the holiday season starts to come to a close, it's that time of year to start thinking forward to the new year ahead. With 2017 just about past us, 2018 is right around the corner. It's a great time to reflect on the year gone by and to get clear on what you'd like to accomplish in the new upcoming year.

Sometimes the home can be forgotten in our new year's resolutions. So, here at Amy Youngblood Interiors, we've decided to put together five easily attainable goals for yours in 2018!

Go bolder: Most of us can relate to the fear of committing to a design trend, especially one that might be a little more bold. Have you always loved the color pink but have shied against using it in your home? How about painting an accent wall in your living room? Or feeling like the layout in your living room has been the same for years and it's time to switch it up? Go right ahead and do it! With a vibrant shade of purple being Pantone's color of the year for 2018, we have a feeling that this year will be all about making bolder, brighter, and braver design choices.

Get organized and declutter: After the holidays have passed, we usually realize how unorganized we have been. Especially if we've got little ones and they've just gotten a bunch of new toys for Christmas. Where does it all go? Where can you put everything? And how will you find it once it's put away? Vow to clean out old cabinets, drawers and closets and get rid of things you no longer need. Especially if they are broken or no longer work. Make a point to donate the things that you no longer want but that are still in good condition.

Indulge in something new while embracing the old: Have you been dreaming about a new sofa all year but just couldn't quite make the commitment? Or maybe it's something smaller, like updating your textiles in your bedroom to softer, cozier ones. Vow to update at least one major thing in your home this year. And if you decide to purchase that new sofa, make it work with your existing furniture in the room. Sometimes just one change can make the old feel new again.

Be more sustainable: If you do one thing this year, consider switching out your old lightbulbs to all LED. LED bulbs not only last way longer than the old standard bulbs, but they also consume less energy, which will lower your electric bill. LEDs also come in a variety of lighting temperatures - meaning you can still get that desired level of lighting atmosphere, whether it be a cooler, brighter light or a warmer, more cozy light.

Pay attention to that neglected room: This doesn't necessarily mean that you should totally renovate, however, the new year is a great time to start a renovation! Take the master bedroom, for example, which is typically the most neglected room of the home. Revaluate the layout. Does it work for you? If not, maybe it's time to switch it up. How about the pieces of furniture? Do you have enough storage for the things you need to put away? How cozy is your bed? Are there enough pillows, blankets, and sheets to sleep comfortably? And then, of course, check out those walls! Have you painted them recently? Maybe it's time to choose a new color. Take a look at the artwork (or lack of) that you have hanging on your walls. Making small adjustments like these will help transform one of the most neglected rooms in the house into one you can't wait to retreat to!

So goodbye 2017! Here's to going bolder, getting organized, indulging, becoming more sustainable and of course, updating the old into something fresh in 2018!
