7 Steps for Starting Your Home Renovation

October 13, 2014  |  Home Renovation, How to get started

Tackling a big home renovation can be a bit overwhelming especially if you've never done it before.  For example, we've had a huge influx of bathroom remodels lately. Here are some tips on where to start:

1. Consult an interior designer (or architect if you are moving exterior walls).  An experienced designer can measure and layout the existing space in auto cad with proposed options for the new space depending upon your needs.

2. Once the drawings have been produced,  your designer can work with you in obtaining bids from 1-3 reputable contractors. The contractor's bid may include labor only or an allowance not limited to tiling, cabinetry, countertops and plumbing fixtures.

3. Making Selections: Where to start? First of all, don't worry about selecting paint until the very end!  Many of our clients get caught up in that decision when paint color should revolve around more expensive decisions such as countertops and tile.Decide on a look and feel you want with your designer, and he/she can direct you where to make selections.

4. Start with the most expensive items: countertops (granite, solid surface, etc), cabinetry and tile first. This can easily be done in a day or less, especially with the help of a designer.  Your designer can direct you to reliable sources that he/she regularly uses.

5. Plumbing fixtures and lighting:  You can usually select these two at the same source/store.  Again, depending upon your proposed layout, your designer can advise what you need and where and select from there.

6. Paint colors:  Now that you've selected the countertops and tiling, you can select a coordinating color, or wallpaper is very in.

7. Once everything has been selected you can pull numbers together in terms of labor and products and the fun can begin!
