7 Unique Lampshade Shapes Explained

Lampshades are an element that adds to the design of a lamp. There are many different shapes of shade. The main seven include: the tapered drum, the empire, the rectangle, the drum, the bell, the square, and the cylinder. While most of these shapes are self-explanatory, we thought we’d explain them all and tell you what types of rooms they’re most often seen in.

  • Tapered Drum – Tapered drums are a shape that falls between a drum and an empire shade. They can be found in transitional and contemporary designs.
  • Empire – Empire shades are narrower at the top and wider at the bottom. They are found in transitional and contemporary designs.
  • Rectangle – A rectangle shade is shaped just as the name would suggest. They are found in contemporary and modern designs.
  • Drum – The drum shapes are shaped like a drum with completely vertical sides. These shades are found in many different designs.
  • Bell – The bell shape is shaped just like a bell. They are found in traditional designs.
  • Square – The square shape shade is a shape between the empire and a square. These shades are found in all types of designs.
  • Cylinder – The cylinder shape is found in contemporary and modern designs.
