To Wallpaper or Not to Wallpaper?

The concept of using wallpaper can seem outdated or remind us of childhood memories we may want to forget, but using wallpaper and wallcoverings is still a great option today. Picking which walls to wallpaper, which patterns and colors to use, and committing to it permanently can be a daunting task.

The walls in our homes present us with many interior design choices and even challenges since they take up the most space, and are generally the most permanent objects in the room. Furniture can be shifted, pillows can be switched out, but our walls and wallpaper choices permanently stay with us through the seasons and years. So, to wallpaper or not to wallpaper?

Wallpaper is great for adding pattern and depth, it is a great option for accomplishing a muraled look, or adding texture to a wall. There’s an endless assortment of wallpaper options to chose from, making it easy to accomplish the look you are going for in your space.

Wallpaper is also very durable, it doesn’t chip or scratch as easily as paint can, and can usually be wiped clean when it gets stained. Wallpaper can also cover up flaws since walls tend to have dents and cracks that can be easily covered.

However, there are some issues with using wallpaper. The biggest concern when considering wallpaper is the application and removal of wallpaper. Putting up wallpaper is more complicated and time-consuming than painting a wall. It requires cutting around extrusions in the wall, and carefully lining up seams to accomplish a professional look. The removal of wallpaper is also a very strenuous task that may cause you to leave the wallpaper up for longer than it should be, making your space look dated.

These pros and cons are important to consider when deciding if wallpaper is right for you. Consider starting on a small statement wall, or a small room such as your powder room before jumping into the larger areas of your home. Either way, interior design should be fun, and improving your space should bring you joy, so have fun with it and don’t stress yourself out with these decisions.
