Trend Watch: Velvet

If you haven’t noticed already, interior design trends have been going through a bit of a throw-back theme lately. Just to name a few, we’ve got brass, wallpaper and retro-inspired furnishings all making a strong comeback. So, naturally, you shouldn’t be surprised that one of those trends having another go-around is velvet.

Velvet conjures up feelings of richness, warmth and luxury. When we think of velvet, we imagine dark, mysterious parlor rooms of the past. We think of decadent sitting rooms, relaxing bedrooms and an overall feeling of luxe.

So what makes velvet so luxurious? Velvet is woven on a loom that weaves two different thicknesses of the material at the same time. The two pieces are cut apart to create a pile effect, and then the two are wound on separate take-up rolls. It can also be made out of different types of material such as silk, rayon, and cotton. There are also different types of velvet including crushed, chiffon, hammered, embossed, and velveteen, just to name a few.

Not so sure velvet is the right trend for you? Take a look at some of the ways you can incorporate this lush texture into your home.

  1. Furniture: We can’t get over how beautiful velvet looks when upholstered on a tufted sofa or armchair. In a warm, dark color, velvet furniture in your home transforms the space from one of ordinary to one of luxury.
  1. Window treatments: Velvet drapes not only look dramatic, but they are great for regulating the temperature and light level in your home. In the winter, they will help seal the warm air inside. In the summer, use them to block out the sunlight and keep your room cooler.
  1. Textiles: If you’re not sure how you feel about velvet, look for throw pillows and even throw blankets to add to your sofa or bed. This is great to do if you only want a pop of it in your space. Adding a bit of it here or there will feel a little less overwhelming and will be less of a commitment than a velvet sofa.
  1. Headboard: What could feel richer than a velvet tufted headboard? We couldn’t agree more! Not only does it look elegant, but it’s also a soft welcome to rest at the end of your day.
